Understand Her Menstrual Needs: Mabeta Njanga girls in Limbe Get Free Sanitary Pad Donation Following KFMHD August Donation.
Less Privileged girls in Mabeta Njanga – Limbe, who struggle with period poverty, received free donations of sanitary pads to improve their menstrual hygiene on 1/08/2022.
The rise in poor menstrual hygiene can cause serious health risks, like reproductive and urinary tract infections which can result in future infertility and birth complications. And more women especially in rural communities lack proper education on menstrual hygiene management thus, women in the Mabeta Njanga community had to be educated on menstrual health.
Since the 2016 crisis in Cameroon and the current rise in prices of goods, menstruating girls find it difficult to afford sanitary pads in such areas and this has greatly affected their menstrual health.
Less privileged girls, female Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Mabeta Njanga, Limbe Cameroon, suffering from period poverty, have received free sanitary pads donations/education on Menstrual Health and Hygiene.
Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) starts with the choice of the best sanitary materials, their proper use, disposal, and body cleanliness.
Despite the challenges related to menstrual hygiene management, menstrual hygiene has been routinely ignored by professionals in the education sector.
In Cameroon, MHM is one of the critical problems adolescent girls face. They commonly use rags from old clothes, such practices increase their susceptibility to infections. Lack of awareness on how to use sanitary pads and affordability are some of the reasons for poor menstrual health.
Problem:
Proper disposal of used menstrual material is still a challenge for women/girls living in Mabeta Njanga – Limbe, Cameroon. Most females dispose of used sanitary pads in the sea which is a serious environmental issue.
A wake-up call:
- Menstrual Hygiene, Management, and Waste Disposal
- Implementation of safe and effective MHM practice.
- Door-to-door sensitization on Menstrual Health
