Empowering Girls, Transforming Lives: Katchoua Foundation’s Menstrual Hygiene Initiative

Menstruation should never be a barrier to education and confidence. Yet, many girls from underprivileged backgrounds struggle with menstrual hygiene due to a lack of knowledge and access to sanitary products. This month, under the powerful theme “Understand Her Menstrual Needs,” Katchoua Foundation successfully conducted another impactful Menstrual Health Mini-Workshop at MARIO Evening School, Simbock, Yaounde, on March 7, 2025.

Organized and facilitated passionately by our volunteer, Konge Fellan, the workshop welcomed 50 enthusiastic participants, including 44 girls and 6 boys, predominantly internally displaced students aged 12 to 25 years. The inclusion of boys underscores our commitment to fostering understanding, respect, and empathy, creating a supportive community for everyone.

The workshop employed interactive methods, including group exercises, role-playing scenarios, and visual aids like charts and sticky notes, to ensure effective engagement and comprehensive understanding. Participants gained essential knowledge about menstrual cycle tracking, the biological aspects of menstruation, and the crucial phases involved.

Key highlights included:

  • Practical guidance on menstrual hygiene management, including the correct use of sanitary pads, tampons, and menstrual cups.
  • Dispelling prevalent myths, taboos, and misinformation surrounding menstruation.
  • Empowering girls with techniques to track their menstrual cycles, predict upcoming periods, and proactively manage menstrual health and associated discomforts.
  • Educating participants on recognizing symptoms that require medical attention, ensuring they know when and how to seek professional healthcare.

At the conclusion of the workshop, all female participants received free sanitary pads, significantly helping reduce absenteeism due to menstruation and boosting their confidence to stay actively engaged in school. The heartfelt appreciation expressed by the participants reaffirms the importance and effectiveness of our mission.

We invite everyone to join us in raising awareness and support for menstrual health education. Let’s empower girls today for a brighter tomorrow!

Together, we can break barriers, eliminate stigmas, and transform lives.
