International Day of Immunology 2022 — Vaccines

Theme: “Create Immunology Awareness to Improve Vaccine Uptake in our Community” held at the  University of Buea on April 29, 2022.

Highlights:

History of the day of Immunology (Speaker; Nguele Ampama Mireille MSc.)

International Day of Immunology is celebrated on the 29th of April to raise global awareness of the significance of immunology in the fight against autoimmunity, infection, and cancer. The 2022 theme for the Day of Immunology is “Vaccines”.

What is Immunology?

The immune system is a very important body defense system that helps protect against infections. Our body’s immune cells act as front-line soldiers to kill potentially harmful pathogens through their potent immune defenses.

The scientific study of the body’s immune cells and immune system concerning their functioning is thus referred to as Immunology.

International Day of Immunology is celebrated on April 29th to increase community awareness of immunology and its effect on overall well-being.

The immune system is the key to the body’s defense against infections.
It was necessary for us to remind the community about the Basic Immunology (speaker; Amana Bokagne, MSc.)
It is important to understand what happens to the body during an allergic response and the factors responsible for causing them. It will lead to better methods of diagnosing, preventing, and controlling diseases.

The international day serves as a bridge between understanding the immune system and raising global awareness of immunology.

However, this immune system may sometimes turn against the body’s cells and tissues, resulting in something called autoimmunity. Autoimmune diseases destruct the body’s organs and overall functioning, often resulting in devastating outcomes knowing the essence of Vaccines will play a great role.

The theme for this year is “Vaccines”.
There was a need for us all to join in the effort to create a global awareness of the importance of immunity in the fight against infection, autoimmunity, and cancer.

The ongoing pandemic situation due to COVID-19 has significantly laid forth the critical aspects of immunity in protecting an individual against this deadly disease.
Promoting public awareness of the global event, especially during this difficult year of a pandemic will help fight infection.

Together with the University of Buea, we encourage several other communities to connect in the effort of increasing global awareness of immunology by discussing the Challenges of vaccination in Africa(speaker; Martha Ngoe. MSc.)

This year, in 2022, the Katchoua Foundation, University of Buea, IDL, YEFIS, IUIS & EFIS, and others join forces for special sessions to mark the Day of Immunology. Featuring presentations, quizzes, and a panel discussion, it brings together global experts to take stock of where we are and what the future may hold.

Organizers:
Amana Bokagne Therese Vanessa, Nguele Ampama Mireille, Sone Bertrand Myson, and other researchers from the Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory as well as the Biochemistry Department at the University of Buea, Cameroon.

Special thanks to the best Immunologist, Prof. Achidi Eric(University of Buea) who thrilled and helped answer some of the most burning questions on Immunology
