Solving the problem of Youth Unemployment Facing Economies and Societies in COVID-19

July 15, 2020, Youth Skills Day took place at Ayah Foundation, Buea Town. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures have led to the worldwide closure of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, threatening the continuity of skills development. Due to the current crisis, young people are more likely to be unemployed than adults. In post-COVID-19 societies, as young people are called upon to contribute to the recovery effort, they will need to be equipped with the skills to successfully manage evolving challenges and the resilience to adapt to future disruptions.

The importance of developing skilled youth is at the core of this year’s message for World Youth Skills Day focused on the theme, “Skills for a Resilient Youth.” The World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and public and private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship.

KGB – Healthy Living Foundation equipped Ayah Foundation youths with the skills required to access the world of work, including skills for self-employment.

  1. Detergent (omo) production. Solving the problem of effective hand washing and reassuring youths of healthy living in the Crisis. As community workers, doing this can reduce access barriers to the world of work and creating PEACE.
  2. Vinegar production. Offering skills development opportunities for low-skilled people who are under – or unemployed, out of school youth and individuals not in education, employment, and training. Providing health benefits of Vinegar.
  3. Debunking myths like; cleaning with vinegar can kill COVID-19.

As young people continue to showcase their adaptability and resilience at this challenging time, KGB – Healthy Living Foundation is calling on all the youth to prepare themselves with the capacities to respond to rapid changes in employment and entrepreneurship in the sectors that are hardest hit by the crisis.

The event was organized by the KGB – Healthy Living Foundation. Thank you (YALI Partners, Fancyread) for joining and engaging in this practical celebration which brought together young people, the orphans, and others.
